Coming off of an impressive home win against Fairfield on Saturday, Aug. 24, Texas A&M Soccer traveled to the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field to take on the Baylor Bears who handed them their second loss of the season. Great Baylor defense and playmaking ultimately led to the Maroon and White’s defeat.
Starting off, Baylor attempted to strike first as senior defender Ava Colberg and junior forward Tyler Isgrig took shots but were unsuccessful.
Both teams proved it would be a defensive game as only 20 total shots were taken, and only four were on goal. Going into the half, all on the field were itching to change the score.
The Bears came out sharp on offense to start the second period, but A&M’s freshman goalkeeper Sydney Fuller made two incredible saves in the 60th and 77th minutes.
The Bears struck first in the 84th minute, as Isgrig cut to the middle and beat her defender to score a top right, outside-of-the-box goal.
As time was running down in the 88th minute, the Maroon and White’s senior forward Mia Pante attempted a shot that headed towards the bottom right of the goal, but the Bear’s junior goalkeeper Azul Alvarez saved it, sealing the Aggies’ fate.
“It’s a tough outcome,” coach Guerrieri said. “I thought some of our defenders, Carolyn [Calzada] and Margo [Matula] , really battled hard all night. We got some really good saves by [Fuller] in goal. Baylor scored on a terrific goal that she couldn’t do much about. I’m disappointed in our performance on attack. It’s something we’ve got to improve upon immediately because we’ve got a really good opponent coming to Ellis Field Thursday with nationally ranked TCU.”
Next, A&M will prepare to take on TCU at Ellis Field at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5.
