In its first exhibition game, Texas A&M women’s soccer and the Rice Owls displayed outstanding skill at Ellis Field on Saturday, August 3. Coming off of a solid season where they lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Aggies came ready to play.
The Maroon and White took down the Owls 1-0 behind a lockdown defense and an incredible goal from senior F MaKhiya McDonald.
Just before the nine minute mark, McDonald received a pass from junior Sydney Becerra and was able to beat Rice’s graduate GK Faith Hutchins to put the Maroon and White on the board.
Following their goal, the Aggies constantly put pressure on the Owls’ defense and forced Hutchins to make three saves on their way to recording four shots on goal.
With A&M’s outstanding defense, Rice was only able to record one shot and zero shots on goal. After dominating the defensive side of the game, the Aggies never looked back.
The game was called after the first half concluded due to a lightning delay. A&M’s next game will be at Washburne Stadium in Dallas on Thursday, August 8 as they take on the SMU Mustangs.
