At least 272 people were killed, 2,527 injured and countless left homeless after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador Saturday evening.
The coastal Manabi Province was the hardest-hit area during the quake, leading to the death of about 200 people. Other Ecuadorian cities, including Manta, Portoviejo and Pedernales, also suffered severe devastation.
Rescue efforts have surfaced in light of the tragedy from all corners of the world, including Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Peru. The European Union said it released 1 million euros in humanitarian aid to help victims of the quake, as well as an airlift.
Robert Danin, Class of 1997 and former president of the A&M Ecuadorian Club, said the tragedy has been difficult for Ecuadorians both in and out of the country, and the relief efforts bring comfort.
“The tragedy we lived this past Saturday night has been very hard for all Ecuadorians,” Danin said. “ I believe this has been the strongest earthquake we have ever had in the history, given the magnitude of the damages caused. Many cities in Ecuador are under a vast damage and many organizations, public and private, local and international are cooperating with the finding of survivors.”
