The Texas A&M softball team took care of its opponents in a doubleheader day yet again, as it did Friday.
After trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in the first matchup against Illinois State, the Aggies found a way to win by rallying and scoring five runs to propel them to a 7-3 victory.
No. 23 A&M received a sac fly from Ashley Walters, which brought Tori Vidales into home plate, tying the game 3-3.
A double from Erica Russell gave the Aggies a 5-3 lead, and they never looked back. Later in the sixth Brittany Clopton hit one deep and brought in Kayla Ober and Erica Russell to give A&M a 7-3 lead.
Head coach Jo Evans said the keys to the comeback victory were persevering and remaining consistent throughout the lineup.
“I thought our kids did a good job offensively really attacking when we got behind in that first game,” Evans said. “We still fought hard, didn’t give up, and hitting throughout the lineup. We’re not counting on one or two hitters, but throughout the lineup, people are stepping up in different situations.”
The second game of the doubleheader was a 7-1 victory against Boston University, which helped Texas A&M record its ninth straight win. The Aggies batters started the game hot, scoring all seven of their runs by the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Aggies took a 2-0 lead in the second after a single from freshman Erica Russell sent Kristen Kuyos home, and an error from Boston University allowed Reagon Boenker to score.
Freshman Tori Vidales helped the Aggies gain a 5-0 lead after a sac fly brought in Erica Russell. Vidales later hit a double to right center field, allowing Brittany Clopton and Alex Masek to score. Walters and April Ryan were able to bring in two runners during the bottom of the fourth to help extend the lead to 7-0.
Senior pitcher Rachel Fox recorded eleven strikeouts in the first game, and pitcher Katy Marks only allowed one runner to score in the second game. Evans praised her pitchers for the way they played throughout the two games as well as the importance of the strong Aggie defense.
“Tonight in the Boston game, I thought Katy Marks was terrific on the mound and really sharp,” Evans said. “Our pitchers are doing what we need them to do, and our hitters are doing a nice job. Really, I thought our defense was the star tonight. I thought in both games we played great defense and took care of the ball. I’m pleased; I think we’re playing well.”
The Aggies last game against UTSA has been canceled and will be rescheduled for another time.
