The University Police Department reported that local businesses have notified them of several students attempting to buy pre-loaded debit cards after receiving threatening calls from unidentified individuals claiming to be with the University System, Internal Revenue Service or a law enforcement agency, according to a UPD email.
According to the email, the victims are told they owe money for unpaid taxes, tuition or arrest warrants and are asked to make a payment via pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.
The victims are then told that not cooperating could result in dismissal from the University, arrest or deportation.
UPD warns students to be cautious if contacted by anyone referring to an unfamiliar debt or charge.
Anyone who has information regarding these scams have been asked to contact UPD at 979-845-2345.
