Q: Rudder, Gill, Reveille…everyone knows who these names are associated with, but who is Kyle? And how did he get a whole field named after him? I must have missed that part in Fish Camp …- Travis Barker, 2006
A: Don’t feel left out – surprisingly, many Aggies don’t know how Kyle Field got its name.
Edwin J. Kyle, a professor of horticulture, became president of the General Athletic Association in 1904 when athletic contests were held near the area that is now Simpson Drill Field.
Kyle decided the only way to generate any kind of revenue was to have a proper athletic facility. So in 1905, the early beginnings of Kyle Field began as a small bleacher stand that could hold about 500 fans.
On Oct. 7, 1905, A&M played its first football game on the field. The result? A 29-0 victory over the Houston Y.M.C.A.
Though it was no official ceremony, the Corps of Cadets named the field for him in 1906, and the name has since stuck.
