I was 16 when I began my freshman status at Texas A&M. My only sibling, my brother, had just died in a motorcycle accident two months before I graduated from high school, and my parents wanted me to stay home for another year. I could only take nine hours each semester and drove back and forth every day, 100 miles round trip, to keep my head above water here.
I made two hard-earned Ds in my first year. Since then, I have taken 16-hour semesters to graduate on time and will be attempting an 18 or a 21 next, while making only 2 Cs. However, the two Ds continue to drag down my chances of getting into the Counseling Psychology Graduate School Program. I am the shining example of why this grade exclusion policy was set in place. Thank you, Dr. Gates, for understanding that some of us did try the best we could.
