The No. 5 Texas A&M men’s swimming and diving teams scored 1,469 points to stay undefeated in the Art Adamson Invitational at the Rec Center Natatorium.
LSU finished second with 991.5 points and Utah ended third with 755.5 points over the three-day event, which is the last men’s swimming and diving competition of the year.
Junior Trey Dickey made his presence felt, setting two new school distance records in the 1000-yard free in 8 minutes and 58.43 seconds and even dethroned his own record in the 1650 free, 14:51.46.
Sophomore Baylor Nelson was able to continue his victorious ways, winning the 200 back with a season-best 1:41.82.
The Aggies put together a 1-2 finish in the 200 breast, with senior Alex Sanchez winning ahead of freshman Logan Brown with times of 1:51.13 and 1:53.15, respectively.
Junior Clayton Conklin won the 200 fly with a time of 1:43.30. Freshman Robert Bonilla Flores finished fourth with a 1:46.03. Sophomore Maximiliano Vega Cuevas was on the top step in the B final with a time of 1:45.36. All three swimmers set new career bests in the 200 fly.
Off the diving boards, senior Takuto Endo took second place with 361.25 points and junior Rhett Hensley was third with a score of 337.15. Both men picked up NCAA Zones scores at the event.
Coach Jay Holmes said the Art Adamson Invite is helpful when it comes to checking the swimmers’ progress.
“We really enjoy doing the Art Adamson Invite; historically, it has been a great meet for us,” Holmes said. “Winning the meet is great, but what we are really looking for is how our guys are doing, because we really need to get a look at where they are in the season. We consider this our midterm exam.We see where we are at and what we need to be working on.”
The Aggies get a lengthy break before their next competition when they travel to Fort Worth to take on the TCU Horned Frogs at the University Recreation Center on Saturday, Jan. 13.
