Stuckey returns to the stage for Ring Day

As another Ring Day arrives, so does the chance for “the rapping professor” to bring hype surrounding the Aggie gold.
Sociology professor Reuben May, also known as Reginald Stuckey, the rapping professor, will perform Friday night at Basil Whippets on Northgate for the Ring Bling Concert.
“Ring day is an important day for Aggies,” Stuckey said. “As much love and appreciation that my students show me, I try to show it back. This concert is an acknowledgment of this accomplishment. I actually have a chant that I’ll do in celebration of the day and the students accomplishments.”
Stuckey, who is known to many students as the professor who raps on benches around campus, said the venue on Northgate will give the show a different vibe.
“To be honest, they will enjoy themselves and they will realize I am pretty good at what I do,” Stuckey said. “I’m good outside on the benches, but I’m pretty good inside. It turns out to be a good time and everyone that I’ve seen that’s gone to a concert said it was a great concert.”
Stuckey started his rapping career when one student encouraged him to perform after seeing a video of him lip syncing. Since then, he said he has played about 10 shows, including The Corner, Foundations and The Backyard. Stuckey said he enjoys performing in front of students and feeds off the crowd.
“Within 30 seconds of starting, I’m already in a world that the crowd can only feed,” Stuckey said. “So it’s the nerves right before you go and then as you begin the music and the fans have a common effect. What I like to say is when you master a verse and write the lyrics you’re about to share them, I say this thing like ‘be the verse’ — don’t say the verse — be the verse.”
Stuckey said he likes showing support for students receiving their ring because his students support him at his shows.
“I would like to say, if you are celebrating your Ring Day, come and join me because we are gonna have a great time. Bring your family and friends too. The #rappingprofessor has a great show for everyone,” Stuckey said.
