Photographers and writers from Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, TIPA, cover an open forum interviewing the candidates for the College Station Police Department police chief. The forum was open to the public from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton. It featured pre-determined questions from various neighborhoods and civic groups. The police chief will oversee a department of 114 officers, 50 civilian staff and an operating budget of $12 million. In addition, the department is in the midst of a $3.3 million expansion to police headquarters. About 600 students and advisers from universities across Texas came to College Station Thursday and Friday to compete in more than 25 on-site events. With the original 1909 meeting at Baylor, TIPA became the oldest collegiate press association in the nation and has grown into one of the largest and most respected collegiate groups in the country.
