The No. 15 Texas A&M women’s golf team traveled to Paradise Island in the Bahamas with nine other universities to compete in the White Sands Invitational from Friday to Sunday. The Aggies finished in fourth place at 23-over 595, eight strokes back of first-place Kansas.
The first round of the tournament was canceled due to heavy rain. Because of the cancellation on Friday, the tournament was adjusted to a 36-hole match, with 18 holes played on Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday saw the Aggies swing a team 14-over 298, finishing third behind Purdue in first and Baylor in second. Senior Lauren Nguyen finished tied for fourth with an impressive 2-over 73. Trailing Nguyen for the Aggies was freshman Vanessa Borovilos, who was tied for ninth at 3-over 74.
Sophomore Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio shot a 4-over 75, tying for 13th. Junior Kynadie Adams finished her day on a 5-over 76, placing her in a tie 19th. Finishing out the Maroon and White’s lineup, sophomore Sky Sudberry shot a 12-over 83 and placed 53rd. Senior Lana Calibuso-Kwee competed individually, shooting 10-over 81 and tying for 46th.
Sunday saw the Aggies drop one spot to fourth, falling short to Kansas, second-place Purdue and third-place Baylor.
Nguyen finished tied for ninth after a 3-over 75 in the second round, totaling a score of 5-over 148 for the tournament. It marked Nguyen’s best finish in her career at A&M.
Sudberry moved up 15 spots on Day 2, finishing in 38th after an even-par 72 with a total score of 12-over 155. Adams also moved up six spots, ending the competition in 13th at 6-over 149 following a score of 1-over 73 on Sunday. Fernandez García-Poggio finished her campaign in 27th with a score of 9-over 152. Borovilos finished 41st, shooting 13-over 156 to end team play for the Aggies.
Calibuso-Kwee ended her individual campaign at 56th with a score of 19-over 162.
The Aggies will finalize their fall campaign at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Challenge on Oct. 28-29 at Ridglea Country Club in Fort Worth.
