Texas A&M sophomore running back Rueben Owens II is expected to miss the entire 2024 season after sustaining a lower-body injury in an intrasquad scrimmage, per ESPN’s Max Olson.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Owens made five starts for the Aggies last season and totaled 385 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The speedster was also deployed as a kick returner and tacked on 109 yards as a receiver on his way to being named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.
Owens’ injury leaves the Aggies staring at a thin running back group with junior Le’Veon Moss, redshirt junior Amari Daniels and Stanford transfer graduate EJ Smith as the only scholarship runners.
While Owens was the most highly-touted recruit of the room, the Maroon and White were expected to prominently feature the committee of RBs. and divide the workload. In 2023, the three-pronged attack led the way for an A&M offense that rushed for 1,770 yards.
Daniels led the group a year ago with 105 carries for 532 yards and six scores, while Moss had 96 carries for 484 yards and five touchdowns. Smith, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmit Smith, amassed 460 all-purpose yards and one total touchdown for the Cardinal in 2023.
A&M opens the season against Notre Dame at Kyle Field on Aug. 31.
