The Texas A&M women’s tennis team will host both Texas State and Sam Houston State on Friday.
The Aggies are 2-0 with 7-0 wins over University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Prairie View A&M on Jan. 13.
“We were very pleased with our performance there,” head coach Mark Weaver said. “It’s always nice to get two wins under your belt and we definitely fought through first match nerves especially for the freshmen. We had two decisive wins, winning both 7-0. We didn’t drop a set in any of the matches so that was encouraging. I felt very good about that.”
The team’s three freshman, Dorthea Fee-Hviding, Iulia Ivascu and Riley McQuaid each won six singles matches and two doubles matches, though two of those wins were by forfeit.
Senior Eva Paalma defeated her singles opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0, then joined senior Domenica Gonzalez to crush their doubles competition 6-3 and 6-2.
“Everybody played very well,” Weaver said. “I thought [the freshmen] all performed pretty equally, played pretty well. I think Eva Paalma, she’s really turned things around. She had a rough fall, made some big improvements since this past fall. They all won fairly routinely. I think just overall as a group we were definitely ready to go and played with lots of energy and things went quite well.”
Texas State is 0-1 after a loss to No. 12 Texas. The Sam Houston State Bearkats are 1-0 and coming off a win over Prairie View A&M.
“I expect the competition to be a lot tougher, probably a level tougher or so,” Weaver said. “I also think we’ve probably even picked our games up. We’ve had some really good practices, so I expect us actually to even play a little bit better. I expect it to go well. It looks like the weather’s going to be nice and we’re looking forward to battling it out.”
On Friday, the Aggies will take on Texas State at 12 p.m. and Sam Houston at 4 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Cente
