What started as a cool fall morning quickly turned into hot Aggie action as the Texas A&M women’s club soccer team defeated Texas Tech 6-0 at the Penberthy Rec Sports Complex on Sunday.
A&M did not play Texas Tech last season but is fresh off a 2-1 win against rival Texas. The Aggies continued their winning streak and dominated with six goals while keeping Texas Tech out of the net. The first-half play was fairly even between the teams, but the Aggies came out of halftime firing on all cylinders.
The turning point for the Aggies was a shift to play their own style of game, coach Devonn Mendoza said.
“The first half, it felt like we were playing to their level. … It doesn’t matter what team we play. We play our game,” Mendoza said. “We really made it a point to them: We need to play our game. We’re not playing down.”
Texas Tech started the game with possession, but, by halftime, A&M led 1-0 with a goal by senior forward Brooke Brown. In the first few minutes of the second half, freshman F Kaiya Bullock scored, making it 2-0. The momentum continued with two goals by senior F Kelsey Lyle, a goal by junior F Madeline Day and a second score by Brown for the 6-0 win.
“The second half really kind of cleaned up our little mistakes,” Mendoza said. “I felt like the first half wasn’t a great representation of what we actually are here to present.”
Sophomore F Rocio Salgado said picking up the pace in the second half made the difference.
“We have honestly had a really solid season,” Salgado said. “We’ve worked hard up until now, so I think coming into the next couple of games, we’re gonna continue to improve, obviously, and finish out strong.”
Staying fresh and avoiding injuries will be key to keeping the win streak alive against LSU on Sunday, Oct. 13, Mendoza said, noting the Tigers have always been a top opponent.
