Coming off a win against Texas Tech, the Texas A&M women’s club soccer team is heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to face off with LSU on Sunday, Oct. 13.
The team is currently 4-0 in regular season play and is fresh off a decisive 6-0 win against Texas Tech on Sept. 29. The Aggies did not play LSU last season. LSU is currently 2-0-1 following a 3-1 win against Baylor and a tie with TCU. The Aggies are coming off a bye week while LSU will face Texas on Oct. 6.
The Aggies beat Baylor and Texas earlier in the season and won a forfeit against SMU.
With three more games until regionals, Coach Devonn Mendoza said the team is making steady progress toward a return to nationals in Round Rock after its 2023 appearance.
“We are building in the right direction and at a good pace,” Mendoza said. “I always have the expectation of my team to go to nationals. They are a very talented group.”
Last season, the women lost in the group stage of nationals to UC Davis after its first-day action, winning against Miami University and losing to Alabama.
Mendoza said he has prioritized going over mistakes made in previous games to clean up and perfect the basics. After a confident win against Texas, its hardest game of the year, he said he has been able to notice who can step up and show out during a game.
The team has worked hard to make progress, journalism sophomore forward Rocio Salgado said.
“I think coming into the next couple of games, we’re gonna continue to improve, obviously, and finish out strong until regionals,” Salgado said.
Regionals are scheduled for Nov. 1-3 in Denton before nationals in Round Rock on Nov. 21-23.
Health sophomore defender Caroline Geertsema said she believes the team has proven its strength so far this season.
“It’s nice to know that I can trust whomever I’m playing with,” Geertsema said. “I feel confident in my team and every Aggie that steps on that field, and I think that we will continue to improve and grow as a team. We Aggies are ready to BTHO nationals.”
