The Texas A&M University Police Department is actively investigating the death of a freshman found in the courtyard of Dunn Hall.

On the morning of Sunday, Oct. 15, the Texas A&M University Police Department, or UPD, began investigating the reported death. At the time, UPD did not release any additional information, but in the evening, Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Ramirez confirmed the death.

“It is with deep sadness that I confirm that a Texas A&M student passed away early this morning,” Ramirez wrote in a campus-wide statement. “Britney Romero was a freshman health major. Our hearts ache for Britney’s family and friends. They have our deepest sympathies and support as they navigate this devastating loss.”

Ramirez said UPD reported that Romero fell from the third-floor balcony and an autopsy has been ordered. Further information is not available at this time.

“We want to emphasize that Texas A&M’s top priority is our commitment to the well-being and safety of all our students,” Ramirez wrote. “We intend to conduct a thorough and comprehensive review of what happened immediately.

“We encourage our Aggie community to come together to support one another, as we always do at times like this, while also praying for and supporting Britney’s family and all those grieving this tragic loss,” Ramirez wrote.

Ramirez said he encouraged students to speak with University Health Services counselors or caseworkers at Student Assistance Services, who also are available on standby. Students can use the TELUS Health Support App or call A&M’s HelpLine is available from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends at 979-845-2700.
