Women’s golf finishes second under Navarro’s dominance

Marijosse Navarro might just be the most electric player in college golf today. The Texas A&M sophomore golfer has carded top five performances in each of her last four events, including back-to-back victories, with her latest coming at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane’ohe, Hawaii.
Navarro, ranked No. 8, was recently one of ten players nominated to the Annika Award Watch List, a recognition honoring country’s top women’s golfer. She effectively used rounds of -2 (70), -2 (70) and +1 (73) to fend off a trio of golfers from Oklahoma State by one stroke and claim the event’s title out of 88 total participants.
After giving back one stroke on the front nine, Navarro activated grind mode at the turn and churned out seven pars, with a counteracting birdie and bogey, on the back nine. This included a handy one at the par 3, 18th which clinched her victory outright this time.
Navarro used a five hole playoff at the team’s previous tournament, the UC Irvine Invitational, to hold off the University of Southern California’s Gabriella Then. Navarro’s victory at the UC Irvine Invitational earned her special exemption into the LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic at the end of this month.
Not trailing too far behind Navarro on this week’s leaderboard were the likes of A&M’s Bianca Fabrizio and Maddie Szeryk, who finished with cumulative scores of Even and +2, and finished in a tie for fifth and a tie for 10th place.
Fabrizio’s top five finish marked her third in her last four events, with the highlight of those coming in a sudden death, playoff victory of her own at the Seminole Matchup just under a month ago.
Together, Navarro and Fabrizio are responsible for three consecutive individual tournament titles for A&M, which is the first time in school history.
No. 15 A&M wrapped up action at the Thompson Invitational in second place, posting a cumulative score of +6 (870), eight strokes behind the first place Oklahoma State Cowboys. As a team, A&M has not finished outside the top five in any of its events in the Aggies 2014-15 campaign.
The Aggies now look to carry their momentum over to the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona on Monday.
