After a whirlwind beginning of the season, Texas A&M men’s rugby’s Grey squad looks to score another win as they face TCU in Dallas on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The team is 1-1 on the season after beating Sam Houston in the blistering Texas heat at home on Sept. 14 before falling to Tennessee at Tennessee Rugby Park on Sept. 21. The Aggies were rained out last season when scheduled to play TCU on Feb. 10, 2023, making this Saturday the first matchup between the Horned Frogs and the Aggies since TCU’s return to rugby competition.
The Grey squad is looking to redeem a 29-13 road loss at Tennessee and put another win on its record. The Grey squad has four regular-season matches, including the Old Maroon Tournament on Oct. 12 and UTSA on Nov. 2, both at Penberthy Rec Sports Complex.
What started with clear skies and sun shortly turned into a storm in Knoxville, Tennessee. Unlike the A&M Maroon squad, which played in the heat, the Grey squad played under grey skies before a sudden downpour. The wet grass caused players to slide in the mud, and maintaining possession of the ball became a challenge as both teams wrestled to move the ball downfield.
“The sudden change in temperature from very hot to very cold made everything super weird,” kinesiology sophomore Jon DeAnda said. “It did not help us. The climate made it more of a mental challenge for the game.”
Sport management sophomore Ian Linkerhof was the Man of the Match against the Sam Houston Bearkats. In his first season on the Grey side, Linkerhof earned the title after a drive at the end of the game to put points on the board.
“[Game 2] wasn’t so good,” Linkerhof said. “We fought very hard against Tennessee.”
Saturday’s drop kick is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Glencoe Sports Park in Dallas.
