Gary Blair arrived at the press conference this afternoon in good spirits.

The Aggie women’s basketball head coach Gary Blair announced today that this will be his last season at Texas A&M. Blair has been with the Aggies since 2003 and has led the women’s basketball team to two Big 12 Championship wins, a SEC Championship win, and an NCAA Tournament Championship. The women’s basketball team will return to Reed Arena on Nov. 3 for an exhibition against Oklahoma Baptist at 7:00pm, the game is free to attend.

  • Coach Blair passed out candy to all who were in attendance.

  • Coach Blair announced this morning before the press conference that this would be his last season before retiring.

  • Coach Blair began speaking to the media announcing that he would explain his decision and then take questions from the media.

  • During the press conference Coach Blair and most people in attendance were very emotional.

  • Coach Blair explained that he had discussed retirement with former football head coach RC Slocum, and that Slocum was a contributing factor in his decision to retire.

  • Coach Blair had challenge coins minted to celebrate his time as head coach and mark the end of his era.

  • Blair passed out coins to all attendees after he was done speaking.

  • As the press conference was wrapping up, Coach Blair said that he was looking for 2 tickets to Game 6 of the World Series.

  • Coach Blair emphasized that he would not let his retirement get in the way of this season and that he planned on taking this team as far as they can go, before declaring that he “wants to go out on top.”

  • Coach Blair finished by saying that his commitment to Texas A&M was not going anywhere and that after this year he will be in the stands “second-guessing the next coach” just like all the other fans.

  • Coach Blair and one of his former players from his first recruiting classes embracing at the end of the press conference.
