Let begin by saying that I am glad that no innocent bystanders were injured in Tuesday’s shooting on the UT campus. I must, however, take issue with Wednesday’s editorial in The Battalion titled: “Editorial: Shooting raises alarm, disarm campuses.” The notion that banning legal firearms from college campuses will make them safer is absurd at best. People such as Colton Tooley, the UT shooter, obviously have no concern for the law when they choose to commit shootings or other violent crimes in the first place. To think that a law written somewhere would have kept people like Tooley from firing shots on campus because guns “weren’t allowed” is ridiculous. The fact is that the only people affected by gun control laws are the law-abiding citizens who would only use them for defense. Tuesday’s shooting was an unfortunate event, but we can’t allow incidents such as that to jeopardize our right to keep and bear arms.
