Ten were reported dead and seven wounded Thursday after a shooter opened fire at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg, Ore, said Douglas Co. Sheriff John Hanlin.
At a news conference Thursday, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said officers rushed to the scene after receiving calls about an active shooter around 10:30 a.m.
After arriving on the campus, officers confronted the suspect in a shootout until he was killed.
Hanlin said the investigation of the shooter and his motivation is ongoing.
According to some media reports the suspect asked victims about their religion before opening fire.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown said the suspect was a 20 year-old male. The type of weapon used and whether or not the suspect was a student was unknown.
Rita Cavin, president of Umpqua Community College, said the campus will be closed Friday and throughout the weekend, but the college plans to be open Monday.
