The Texas A&M men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams headed to Columbia,Missouri to open up their SEC slate against Missouri on Friday morning. The Aggies dominated the competition, winning both the men’s and women’s dual meets, 168-132.
The first event plunged into action in the women’s 400-yard medley relay, where the squad of senior Kaitlyn Owens and graduates Bobbi Kennett, Olivia Theall and Chloe Stepanek continued its dominance, securing first on a time of three minutes and 33.07 seconds. On the men’s side of the event, graduate Thomas Shomper, freshman Travis Gulledge, junior Connor Foote and sophomore Ben Scholl edged out a victory by 0.34 seconds at 3:09.60.
In the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle, junior Hayden Miller continued to show why she is one of the top swimmers on the team after first place with a time of 9:44.60. Miller also secured a first-place finish in the women’s 500-yard freestyle in 4:43.31. In the men’s 1,000-yard freestyle, the trio of senior Trey Dickey, senior Munzy Kabbara and Batuhan Filiz took the top-three spots on times of 9:13.50, 9:13.67 and 9.19.44, respectively.
The Maroon and White continued their winning ways in the women’s 200-yard freestyle, as Stepanek took first on a time of 1:44.23, while Miller took third on 1:48.45. On the men’s side, junior Baylor Nelson was able to grab third at 1:37.28.
At the women’s 100-yard backstroke, Owens secured another first-place finish in 53.34 and senior Aviv Barzelay followed up on a third-place result in 54.94. Senior Tyler Hulet finished second on the men’s side, clocking in at 48.16. Gulledge added a third-place finish in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke in 53.88.
In the women’s 200-yard butterfly, Theall and sophomore Katie Walker finished in the top-three spots, with Theall finishing first in 1:55.94 and Walker taking third at 1:58.19. On the men’s side, Dickey also secured a third-place result in 1:48.60.
Owens added another first-place finish in the women’s 50-yard freestyle in 22.66 while the men’s side had another top-three dominance with Foote, Scholl and graduate Collin Fuchs notching times of 19.94, 20.03 and 20.13, respectively.
In the women’s 100-yard freestyle, Stepanek captured another first-place result in 48.58. On the men’s side, Foote, Scholl and Fuchs secured a top-four finish where Foote finished second in 43.82, Fuchs in third at 44.34 and School in fourth at 44.37. Barzelay claimed a second-place result in the women’s 200-yard backstroke while Shomper and Hulet grabbed first and third on the men’s side, respectively. Shomper finished first in 1:43.08 and Hulet secured third in 1:46.64.
At the women’s 200-yard breaststroke, junior Giulia Goerigk finished second in 2:13.78. On the men’s side, the graduate duo of Alex Sanchez and Vincent Ribeiro snagged a second and third place finish with Sanchez finishing at a time of 1:57.21 and Ribeiro finishing in 1:58.80.
In the men’s 500-yard freestyle, Dickey and Filiz continued to rack up wins for the Aggies as Dickey notched a first place finish in 4:26.92 and Filiz recorded a third place result in 4:29.79. Theall added another first in the women’s 100-yard butterfly in 52.44 while freshman Chase Swearingen secured a third place result on the men’s side in 47.39.
Goerigk, junior Kaylee Coffey and sophomore Hannah O’Leary recorded a top-three finish in the women’s 400-yard individual medley. Goerigk finished first in 4:11.88 with Coffey tailing in second in 4:17.25 and O’Leary in third at 4:18.36. In the men’s event, Nelson and Kabbara notch a top-two finish, with Nelson securing first in 3:48.66 and Kabbara in second at 3:51.15.
In the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay, the group of Stepanek, Owens, freshman Ella McQuinn and Theall notched a first place finish in 1:29.75. On the men’s side, two men’s groups finished in the top-three, with the first-place group of Foote, Scholl, Fuchs and Nelson finishing in 1:18.29 and the third-place squad of senior Seth Reno and freshmen Niko Jankovic, Jacob Wimberly and Gulledge in 1:22.57.
In the diving section, graduate Mayson Richards secured first place at 283.58 while freshman Julie Moons took third in 281.18 at the women’s 1-meter diving. In the men’s 1-meter diving, graduate Leonardo Garcia took home first with a dive of 371.10 while freshman Jaxon Bowshire captured a third-place result in 335.33.
In the women’s 3-meter diving, Richards grabbed a second-place result at 290.70. On the men’s side, Garcia dove for another first-place result in 415.80 while senior Rhett Hensley notched in third at 334.20.
The Aggies will travel to Austin to compete in the two-day Texas Diving Invitational from Nov. 15-17 at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
