Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) was nominated to be Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives after a closed-door GOP conference vote Wednesday.
Although Ryan was granted the Republican nomination behind closed doors, he must still secure 218 public votes among the full congressional chamber on Thursday.
Ryan said in a news release before the nomination that the Republican-controlled U.S. House needs a new vision.
“First, we need to move from being an opposition party to a proposition party,” Ryan said. “Because we think the nation is on the wrong path, we have a duty to show the right one.”
Ryan said in the news release that the House needs to commit to conservative values.
“A commitment to our natural rights,” Ryan said. “A commitment to common sense … to compassion … to co-operation — when rooted in genuine conviction and principle — is a commitment to conservatism.”
