More than 20,000 students have registered for The Big Event. But for those who missed the original signup deadline for The Big Event, there is still time. Registration will remain open until Friday.
Kevin Brooks, director of The Big Event and management senior, said there were several reasons for the deadline extension.
“The deadline is being expanded for two reasons,” Brooks said. “One, some student organizations are getting new members this week, so we wanted to give them the chance to sign up as a group for The Big Event. And the second reason that we kept it open was some people got confused with signing up for The Big Event or voting, so we wanted to give them another opportunity.”
Brooks said about 21,000 students have signed up so far, nearing the goal of 22,000.
“At the present moment, we have more than we ever have had in years past with The Big Event, and so we are extremely excited for that,” Brooks said.
Brooks said about 2,700 residents have signed up to be helped during The Big Event. After cancellations, that number will likely be closer to 2,600.
While they are glad to have as many students sign up as possible, Brooks said his team’s goals are not numbers-based.
“Our true goal is to serve as many residents as we possibly can and touch their lives in some way, shape or form,” Brooks said. “And so whether that’s 21,000 students, 20,000 students or five students that would constitute serving one job, that would be a success in our eyes because we’d get to make a difference in that one family.”
Students can sign up at bigeventonline.tamu.edu.
