Star Wars and Nip Slips?

The 2024 Grammys’ Fashion Triumphs and Fails

From captivating couture to purposeful nip slips, the 66th Annual Grammy Awards’ red carpet looks did not disappoint.

The Grammys is a chance for artists and celebrities alike to feature outfits that are just as unique as their sound and style. This, however, leaves the door open for some major fashion fails. I am in no way judging the artist or celebrity — simply the outfit they chose to sport on the red carpet Feb. 4.

I would first like to address the elephant in the room, or on the red carpet if you will: Doja Cat’s nipples. I understand that nipple styling is currently all the rage, but this outfit was seven different flavors of wrong. The sheer corset and high slit left little to the imagination, but if you simply shifted your gaze 4 inches up, there was no need to have an imagination at all. Along with her bare nipples, Doja Cat also chose to style a pair of granny glasses to keep the outfit “modest,” according to People Magazine. Doja’s daring outfit was deemed the “most naked dress ever worn to the Grammys” by Harper’s Bazaar, but I’m not sure this new title is an endearing one to wear.

Other celeb outfits, however, hit all the right notes. Our beloved Taylor Swift wore a beautiful custom Schiaparelli gown that hugged her in all the right places. Taylor was decked out in over 300 carats of black and white diamonds in a necklace that was also an album easter egg, which the pop star is very well known for. Taylor’s “Reputation”-coded outfit left fans, including myself, wondering if this was the evening she would announce “Reputation, Taylor’s Version.” Instead, we were pleasantly surprised with a brand-new album. Needless to say, her look stunned and surprised her fans yet again.

Moving on to my favorite look of the evening: Sofia Richie Grainge in Saint Laurent. This sleek black gown screamed quiet luxury and allowed her to showcase her growing baby bump for one of her first appearances in public since announcing her pregnancy. Her makeup was clean and minimal, with her hair in the classic Sofia-style slicked bun. Sofia is most well known for her “stealth wealth” fashion sense, and this look was another smash hit in my opinion. Overall, this outfit was a chef’s kiss.

While some chose to go with more quiet luxury, Miley Cyrus went the route of C-3PO’s worst nightmare for her red carpet look. The Maison Margiela gold mesh dress left little to the imagination, again. I didn’t know that it was normal to walk a red carpet basically in the nude. The first-time Grammy winner reminded me of Star Wars in a few different ways. The design of her “dress,” if you can call it that, mimicked Princess Leia’s famous gold bikini, while the material and chainlink look reminded me of the Star Wars robot C-3PO gone wrong. While her hairstylist might have been trying to give her the big ‘90s blowout, it ended up more as a blow up. Who knew that the electrocution style was in!

To round out the Grammys outfits with another success was Dua Lipa in Courrèges. This literal metal dress was low cut, covered in silver scales and dazzling. Some are choosing to compare her look to Joan of Arc or medieval armor, but I choose to look at the dress as a bold fashion move that paid off. I found her look to be very unique without being overwhelming or scandalous. Her red hair was left down and slightly curled, with a nude eye and lip to complement. Everything about this look was a hit for me.

The 2024 Grammy looks are sure to leave critics talking for weeks. While I personally wouldn’t choose to bare nipples or wear chainmail to one of the biggest award presentations of the year, I admire those who had the confidence and ability to pull it off. Or at least attempt to pull it off. I’m looking forward to seeing how the stars step up their game for next year!
