The Battalion is proud to announce its editorial staff for the spring semester.
Political science junior Nicholas Gutteridge will lead the publication as its editor-in-chief after serving as the managing editor since May. Journalism sophomore Ian Curtis will take over Gutteridge’s role as the managing editor after serving as the features editor.
“I’m extremely excited to be stepping in as The Battalion’s editor-in-chief,” Gutteridge said. “I think what we have planned for next semester is unlike anything else we’ve seen in recent years.”
Gutteridge joined The Battalion in January 2023 and became news editor in August 2023. He has interned in person at the Pentagon and won several national journalism awards.
Curtis helped lead the life and arts desk during the fall, during which he wrote multiple award-winning articles.
“With trying to expand every desk and continue the stuff we’ve been doing well … it’s a challenge I’m looking forward to,” Curtis said.
Journalism junior Theresa Lozano has become the new head life and arts editor and will lead the desk alongside the incoming associate editor, international studies junior Fallon Ferguson. Sports management junior Braxton Dore’ will head the sports desk with communication junior Matthew Seaver and journalism junior Mathias Cubillan as associate editors. English sophomore Kynlee Bright will step in as design editor.
In a return to a leadership structure used in previous years, two additional associate news editors will be joining the editorial team. English junior Julia Kazda and communication senior Tenny Luhrs will join head news editor and biology senior J. M. Wise to create the largest editorial staff the publication has fielded in several years.
“We have some of the most fantastic editors on staff that we’ve ever had,” Gutteridge said. “There is so much that’s going to be impacting faculty, the student body and the community that we have to be on top of.”
Over the next semester, the Texas legislature meets, the Student Government Association holds its elections and a new chancellor will be announced, just a few of the vital events that the newspaper needs to be prepared to report on, Gutteridge said.
“Ultimately, next semester is going to be fantastic,” Gutteridge said. “What we have planned is going to change The Battalion and set the groundwork for a stronger student publication.”
The incoming editors will join the spring editorial team alongside multiple returning editors who will stay in their current positions.
