Former Texas A&M wide receiver Thomas Johnson was found incompetent to stand trial on Tuesday. The 21-year-old’s mental health was deemed not up to standards, Johnson’s lawyer said, and he will be sent to North Texas State Hospital for treatment and evaluation in hopes of becoming competent.
Johnson was accused last year of using a machete to kill 53-year-old Dave Stephens, a jogger seemingly chosen at random. He confessed to those accusations at the scene of the crime.
The former Dallas Skyline standout caught 30 passes for 339 yards and a touchdown for the Aggies in 2012 and showed real promise in A&M’s spread offense before leaving school late in the season.
