Lindon Victor’s Saturday showing in the 1,500-meter dash event of the men’s decathlon at the Paris Olympics was nothing to write home about. He completed the race in 4 minutes and 43.53 seconds, good for 15th place among the 20 competitors.
It didn’t matter. Despite his finish in the decathlon’s final event, Victor maintained his third-place standing in total points to earn a bronze medal. The accomplishment took on even greater importance on a larger scale, as the former Texas A&M track and field athlete became just the second Grenadian athlete to medal in the Olympics after 400 sprinter Kirani James, who earned gold at the 2012 London Games, silver at Rio and bronze in Tokyo.
Victor’s 8,711 total points finished behind Norway’s Markus Rooth and Germany’s Leo Neugebauer. Competing in his third Olympics, Victor has gotten progressively better after a 16th-place showing in Rio in 2016 and a seventh-place finish in the 2021 Tokyo Games. His personal best and national record came at the 2023 World Championships when he earned a bronze medal with 8,756 points.
Victor was powered by a first-place performance in the discus throw that saw him set an Olympic record with a throw of 53.91 meters, or 176 feet and 10 inches. He also finished in the top-five in the shot put and javelin throw.
Victor competed at A&M from 2016-18, winning the NCAA decathlon championship in 2016 after transferring from Kansas.
