Brazos County to distribute free school supplies

‘Back to School Bash’ invites K-12 families on July 12

Brazos County officials are distributing free backpacks, school supplies and gift cards for K-12 students on July 12 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Bryan High Silver Campus Cafeteria.

The Brazos County Precinct 2 Constable’s office is distributing free backpacks, school supplies and gift cards to local students in need on July 12 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in a “Back to School Bash.”

The group has collected supplies and “wants to make sure every child in Brazos County is prepared for a great 2024-2025 school year,” an emailed statement reads. The Bryan High Silver Campus Cafeteria at 3450 Campus Drive in Bryan will host the giveaway, where officers will assist.

Tony Piccolo, an event participant and coordinator, said over 2,500 backpacks are available for the giveaway. The event is open to K-12 students, though it’s tailored to those attending sixth grade and lower. No identification or credentials are required for entry, and Walmart and Target gift cards will be distributed as prizes for games present, including Spin the Wheel.

Nicholas Gutteridge joined The Battalion in January 2023 as a news reporter before being promoted to news editor in August 2023. He has interned at The Pentagon in Washington D.C. and remotely with the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. As a political science student, he studies the internal workings of political positions, and as a journalist, he seeks to bring those internal workings to light. He is the managing editor of The Battalion for the 2024-25 academic year. Nicholas writes in-depth stories on topics important to students and community members. Previous articles include a dive into a student organization bringing students in contact with a sex offender, a feature on students alleging abuse and manipulation at a local church, and an investigative report on Texas A&M's Title IX enforcement. Nicholas has published work in The Aggieland yearbook and the Maroon Life magazine. He has been honored with multiple nationwide awards, including first-place in-depth news story and first-place feature story. In September 2024, he won second place for nationwide reporter of the year, one of the most intense individual competitions in collegiate journalism.

Amy Leigh Steward, Editor in Chief

Amy Leigh Steward is a neuroscience student from Boerne, Texas. She joined the Life & Arts desk as a writer in Fall 2023 and became the assistant Life & Arts editor in January 2024. She now serves as editor in chief, beginning in May 2024. Outside of The Battalion, she's involved in MSC Aggie Leaders of Tomorrow, TAMIN Building Researchers and Innovators in Neuroscience and Society, and the Society of Undergraduate Biology Students. After graduation, Amy plans to pursue a master's and PhD in neuroscience and go into research, academia and scientific communication.
