Hilaire Kallendorf, a Hispanic and religious studies professor from the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, died in an incident involving a garbage truck Tuesday morning.
A Facebook post from the College Station Police Department said the incident occurred on Atlas Pear Drive at Lake Walk at Traditions around 11 a.m. The City of College Station released a statement soon after the fatal incident was reported.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life involving a City of College Station solid waste vehicle this morning,” the statement reads. “Our sincere and heartfelt condolences and prayers go to the family and all involved. The City of College Station is investigating how the tragedy occurred and will provide more details later.”
College Station has paused waste collection services until Wednesday. A Texas A&M spokesperson said Kallendorf was on a leave of absence. Further details are expected to be released throughout the day and week.

Hilaire’s joy and warm hospitality to me lights my memories of a dear great-niece. I know her family held first place in her heart, closely followed by her teaching life at A&M.

Ms. Kallendorf was my neighbor. We never had the chance to bump shoulders and meet, but I hope she may rest in peace. My condolences to her family and friends.
