Breakaway dabbles in mobile market with launch of new self-study app

Breakaway returned to campus Tuesday with increased student seating and a new digital app.
The “Breakaway Ministries App” was created as a way of reaching more students in a digital era, said Hannah Meyerdirk, an office manager at Breakaway.
“We realized making a new app to try to connect with students was more efficient and effective,” Meyerdirk said.
Meyerdirk said the app has the latest Breakaway podcasts and includes a feature that allows students to do a personal Bible study, called “Engage in the Word.”
Meyerdirk said Breakaway director Ben Stuart created the training video series to help students study the Bible on their own instead of just receiving information passively.
“We are excited about promoting that to students to be able to be biblically grounded and learn on their own,” Meyerdirk said.
The app also includes a Breakaway schedule, a digital Bible and links to Breakaway social media sites.
Jordyn Thorpe, biomedical sciences junior, said she thinks the app will help students connect with Breakaway on the go.
“I love how convenient the app is,” Thorpe said. “I think it is really easy to use. Anywhere I go I can pull it up. If you are in a class really late or you just can’t go that night it is really easy to just pull up the app and sit down for 30 minutes and listen to the podcast.”
Madi Shoemaker, business administration sophomore and Breakaway volunteer, said she thinks the app is a useful tool in teaching new Christians how to study the Bible on their own.
“I think the new app is an incredible tool, especially for new believers and students who may be interested in what Breakaway is,” Shoemaker said. “As much as I would love to see the entire Texas A&M student body at Breakaway — that would be so incredible — but more so I would rather see the Lord’s work move throughout campus from our students.”
Meyerdirk said Breakaway does not keep a record of attendance, but more seats than ever were opened up for attendees Tuesday.
