Junior SS Ali Camarillo and senior LHP Evan Aschenbeck rounded out the 2024 MLB Draft for Texas A&M baseball on Monday as they were selected in the 12th round by the Oakland Athletics and in the 13th round by the Chicago Cubs.
The selections give the Aggies seven draft picks for the second year in a row. A&M is the only school in the nation with three or more selections in each draft since 2001.
Camarillo went 346th overall after being a mainstay at shortstop for the Aggies last season with slick defense. He started each of the team’s 68 games while batting .288 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs.
Before heading to College Station, Camarillo spent two years at Cal State Northridge where he started 74 games and hit .332 and 58 RBIs. His breakout campaign came in 2023, when he hit .371 to rank second in the Big West with a 1.032 OPS that was fourth-best in the conference. He was named to the All-Big West First Team.
The 392nd pick, Aschenbeck was sensational out of the bullpen last season, earning NCBWA Stopper of the Year honors for his efforts. He went 6-1 with an SEC-leading 10 saves and the best ERA in the country at 1.78. Aschenbeck was a workhorse with 32 appearances, allowing 55 hits and 12 walks in 75 ⅔ innings while striking out 87.
The Brenham product was a unanimous All-American and garnered First Team All-SEC distinction. Aschenbeck played at A&M for two years after two seasons at Blinn College, amassing a 14-2 record and a 2.56 ERA with the Aggies. His 13 saves are the seventh-most in the program record books.
