Texas A&M football is expected to finish in the middle of the pack in the conference this season, per the SEC football preseason media poll released Friday.
The Aggies were picked ninth in the poll voted upon by media members at the 2024 SEC Media Days from July 15-18 in Dallas. Three players, senior DL Shemar Turner, junior DL Nic Scourton and junior OL Trey Zuhn III, earned Preseason All-SEC recognition.
Georgia is predicted to win the SEC Championship with 165 votes, while conference newcomer Texas finished second in voting for the champion and predicted order of finish. Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU rounded out the top five. A&M takes on four of the teams in the top 10 this season, including sixth-place Missouri and Auburn in 10th.
This season’s conference championship will feature the top two teams by winning percentage in SEC play. With the additions of Texas and Oklahoma, East and West divisions were eliminated for the first time since 1991. There have been just nine years since 1992 where the conference’s predicted champion went on to win the SEC Championship.
Turner started 12 games last season and was a key piece to an A&M defensive line that led the conference in rush defense at just 108.8 yards per game. He was named to the All-SEC Second Team, with his six sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss ranking in the top 10 among SEC defensive linemen. Turner made 33 tackles, forced two fumbles and blocked two kicks for good measure.
Scourton is new on the scene at A&M after a terrific career at Bryan High School and two seasons at Purdue. He led the Big Ten with 10 sacks in 2023 and finished fourth with 15 tackles for loss, good for Second Team All-Big Ten distinction. Scourton made a statement in spring’s Maroon & White Game with seven tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.
Zuhn has started 25 games at left tackle over the past two seasons and was one of two offensive linemen to start each game last year. The Aggies ran for over 200 yards in three games and passed for over 300 yards on four occasions. Zuhn and the offensive line gave up two or fewer sacks in nine games while allowing 65 tackles for loss for fourth in the SEC.
